It seems things are just getting worse, and the old ways you used to deal with your problems don’t seem to work like they used to. You have tried to figure it out on your own but don’t have the answers. You’re used to being successful. You have done well with school and at your job. You have relationships with people you love and care about, and yet all these parts of your life seem to be struggling more than ever. You don’t want to keep thinking about your past, but you can’t seem to help it.
PTSD Treatment can help you find relief
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is commonly associated with military veterans, and many men don’t think PTSD is what they are dealing with. The men I work with assume it’s just a flaw in their character, or they aren’t working hard enough when the reality is they are experiencing symptoms of PTSD. PTSD can impact anyone who has experienced a traumatic event, but the challenge is often times the men I work with discount their experience as traumatic.
Symptoms of PTSD
There are indications that you might be experiencing PTSD and that you may not have realized the symptoms of the disorder. For some men, symptoms of PTSD start after the event, and for others, it can take longer before they start feeling impacted by what happened. You may feel confused about why you were ok with what happened for a while, but then it seems like out of nowhere, you can’t stop thinking about it, and really bothers you. Here are some of the common symptoms of PTSD:
Negative thoughts:
You may notice yourself repeating negative thoughts about yourself and others. You even have thoughts about the world not being safe and not being able to trust anyone. You may struggle to feel comfortable with yourself and others because of what has happened to you. Negative thinking is something people with PTSD experience frequently.
Avoidance:
A symptom of PTSD is avoidance of situations, places, and people that trigger anxiety or reliving the traumatic event. You try to do anything you can to not think about what happened. When negative thoughts come up, or there are reminders of the trauma, you do anything to push it aside or numb it out.
Hyperarousal:
You may find yourself jumpy or on edge when you have PTSD. You feel like you always have to watch your back or be ready for danger to strike. This might impact your ability to sleep or relax. You feel that you constantly have to be alert, or something bad could happen to you or someone you care about.
