Why I Enjoy Online Marriage Counseling
Some people are hesitant to give online marriage counseling a shot. It seems that some hold the belief that online therapy isn’t as effective as in-person therapy. It’s absolutely not the truth. If you treat an online therapy appointment with the same seriousness that you would with an in-person therapy then you’ll get the same results. The interventions I use in an in-person therapy session and online marriage counseling session will be no different. In fact, there are some bonuses of an online therapy session that cannot be replicated in an in-person session. Let’s talk more about what I like about online marriage counseling.
What I like about online marriage counseling
There are a few things I enjoy about online marriage counseling. However, these are just a few that I want to share with you:
Seeing a couple in their own environment
When a couple attends therapy in a therapy office, they don’t feel completely at home. They might behave and communicate a little bit differently than they would when they are at home in their own environment. The issues that you and your spouse experience are likely in your own environment. Part of my job as a couples therapist is to be able to assess how conflict, communication, and issues arise. I look for patterns and make connections when the struggle for a couple happens. I can see that quicker and more thoroughly through online marriage counseling sessions when you are in your home. I can notice things through a computer screen through how you are interacting with each other at home.
A couple can be more open because they’re more comfortable
Not only does a couple being at home in their environment allows me to see them interact more accurately but it also usually means that a couple is more comfortable in their own home. When you are more comfortable and feel more at home, you are more likely to be more open and honest about how things are going. This also makes the process more effective and saves you time because you are more willing to talk about the things you might be struggling with. You are also more likely to be yourself when you are at home.
Online marriage counseling gives couples more convenience
The most important thing about marriage counseling is that you attend consistently and are practicing skills and the things that are discussed outside of the session. That’s what success and effectiveness come down to when it comes to couples therapy. Online marriage counseling makes it so you are more likely to attend therapy consistently. You have a busy schedule and many obligations to attend to and if therapy is convenient and accessible you are more likely to follow through. I love working with couples that can commit to working on themselves and that is where online marriage counseling is most effective.
